How to Use Search Console’s Generative AI Report

What the report measures, what it does not prove, and how to connect AI visibility with qualified leads.

Google introduced a dedicated generative AI performance report in Search Console in June 2026. For eligible properties, it separates performance for AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. That is a meaningful improvement over guessing from referral strings or manually checking prompts, but the report still needs careful interpretation.

First, Confirm the Property Has Access

The report is rolling out to a subset of sites. If it does not appear, that does not mean the site has no AI visibility. It means the property does not currently have the dedicated reporting surface.

Google’s launch announcement says the report includes clicks and impressions with page, country, device, and date views. Availability and details can change as the rollout expands.

Read the Report in This Order

  1. Start with total impressions and clicks by AI feature to understand scale.
  2. Review pages to see which content Google selects into AI experiences.
  3. Compare countries and devices before assuming the traffic matches the target market.
  4. Use dates to identify sustained movement rather than reacting to one-day volatility.
  5. Compare landing-page engagement and conversions in analytics.
  6. Review qualified leads or revenue before declaring an AI visibility win.

Do Not Confuse Visibility With Attribution

SignalWhat it supportsWhat it does not prove
AI impressionA result containing the property was displayedThat the user read or trusted the citation
AI clickThe user visited the site from the AI resultThat the visit became a qualified lead
Page growthGoogle is selecting a page more oftenThat every page change caused the growth
Country/device mixWhere and how visibility occursThat the traffic matches the buyer profile

Use lead tracking to connect the Search Console page with the form, call, booking, and qualification outcome. Search visibility is an input; revenue is the business result.

The Monthly Reporting Note

A useful client report can be short: AI impressions and clicks by feature, the pages driving the change, important geographic or device shifts, assisted conversions, and the next content or technical action. Avoid a large “AI visibility score” with no clear definition.

“The AI performance report is a Google Search Console snapshot. It measures displayed results and clicks, not whether an AI answer directly caused a sale. Conversion and lead-quality data are reported separately.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I not see the generative AI report in Search Console?

Google is rolling it out gradually to a subset of properties. Lack of access is not evidence that the site never appears in AI results.

Does the report show queries?

Use the dimensions currently available in your property and follow Google’s documentation as the rollout changes. The launch announcement emphasizes performance and page, country, device, and date analysis.

Are AI Overview clicks included in normal Web performance?

Google has historically included AI feature traffic within Search Console reporting. The dedicated report is designed to separate generative AI experiences for clearer analysis.

What is the best AI search KPI?

Use qualified organic leads or revenue influenced by pages receiving AI clicks. Impressions and clicks explain visibility, but they are not the final business outcome.
