Google Business Profile Service Areas: The Setup Rules

How to configure a service-area business without creating fake locations, oversized coverage, or duplicate profiles.

A service area tells customers where you work. It does not create extra offices, expand your real-world proximity, or justify a Google Business Profile in every city you want to rank in. The safest setup is also the clearest: one truthful profile, accurate coverage, and website pages that explain where and how the business actually operates.

Use the Business Model Google Actually Allows

Google’s current service-area guidance allows up to 20 service areas, no longer uses a radius setting, and recommends an overall boundary that is normally within about two hours of driving time from the business base.

Service Areas Do Not Replace Location Relevance

Adding a distant city to the profile does not make the business physically closer to a searcher there. It communicates coverage. Rankings can still vary by distance, competition, relevance, reviews, and the strength of the website.

Use the smallest accurate set of cities, postal codes, or defined areas that describes normal operations. If your crew rarely crosses the metro for a small job, do not publish a statewide service area because one large project once took you there.

When a Separate Profile Is Legitimate

  • The second location is real, permanently staffed, and available to customers during its stated hours.
  • The business can document the location and operates there independently enough to serve the market.
  • The profile is not a shared desk, coworking mail stop, storage unit, or employee’s home created only for rankings.
  • The website and business records consistently support the location.

Most service-area businesses should maintain one profile for the real operating base. Multiple city profiles without separately staffed locations create suspension and trust risk.

How Service-Area Pages Fit the Website

A service-area page can explain the services, response expectations, project types, proof, and local questions for a market. It should not pretend to be an office or repeat the same text with a new place name.

  1. Start with one strong service page for each important offering.
  2. Create a primary locations hub that explains the real coverage model.
  3. Add a location page only when it can carry distinct useful information.
  4. Link location pages to the matching services, proof, and contact path.
  5. Keep the Business Profile, website, citations, and customer-facing promises consistent.

Good Google Business Profile optimization reduces ambiguity. Customers know whether you serve them, Google sees consistent information, and the site does not need a collection of thin city pages to manufacture coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many service areas can I add to Google Business Profile?

Google currently allows up to 20 service areas. Use only areas the business normally serves rather than filling every available slot.

Should a home-based service business hide its address?

Yes, when customers are not served at that address. Configure the profile as a service-area business and remove the public address.

Can I use a virtual office for another Google Business Profile?

No. A virtual office or unstaffed address is not an eligible separate business location.

Does adding a city to my service area make me rank there?

Not by itself. The setting communicates coverage; it does not change the business’s physical proximity or replace relevance, prominence, reviews, and useful local website content.
